Cuba has released all three of the fifty political prisoners who were to be released, as part of the beginning of diplomatic rapprochement between Havana and Washington, as announced on Monday, a senior official in the US administration.
Said the official, who requested anonymity, said that "the Cuban government informed us that they released political prisoners who have pledged their release."
He added without clarifying the identities released: "We welcome this very positive development and are pleased that the Cuban government has fulfilled its promise," pointing out that the US interests section "was able to confirm the release of detainees."
The US State Department has announced that the first formal talks between Cuba and the United States will begin in Havana on 21 of this month in order to normalize diplomatic relations between the two countries.
The talks, which starts from the principle of advertising in the past 17 month historic rapprochement between the two countries, is the first official meeting after 18 months of secret negotiations between Washington and Havana and Canada under the auspices of the Vatican. They will address the talks to open embassies despite the presence of departments to take care of interests.
It is noteworthy that Washington imposed for more than a half-century economic embargo on the communist island....
